Yosemite National Park experiences a Mediterranean type of climate (Köppen climate classification Csa) with hot and dry summers and mildly cold and wet winters.
It lies in the Sierra Nevada of Central California with Sierra National Forest at its southeast and Stanislaus National Forest to its northwest. Yosemite is a land of giant sequoia trees, lakes, mountains, meadows, glaciers, waterfalls, granite cliffs amid extensive biological diversity. The park has five vegetation zones: woodland, lower forest, upper forest, subalpine and alpine.

Summers are long, hot and lack significant rainfall as the average high-temperature shoots to 90°F (32.2°C) in the peak of July. Winters are mildly cold with the average low temperature of 25°F (-3.9°C) at the peak of January.
The climate varies with elevation in Yosemite with a drop in temperatures, increase in rain and snowfall at higher altitudes. Rainfall mainly occurs during the winter months as the annual precipitation averages around 36" (914.4mm). Higher elevations experience rain up to 50" (1270mm) annually at a level of 2600 meters above sea level.
Snowfall is abundant to the tune of 65" (1651mm) during the period between November to March. Spring and autumn fare better regarding the weather compared to the summer and winter.

May and September are the best months to visit Yosemite National Park when the weather is pleasant, and the crowds have not swelled up. Summer is the peak season with heavy road traffic, less availability of campsites and premium rates for everything.
It does not rain much during late spring and early fall, and a majority of the trails are fully accessible as the snow melts on the ground in these periods.
Late May is the best time to view waterfalls roaring with freshly melted snow, while September weather is great for hiking along the trails.

The period from November to March is a time to avoid Yosemite National Park as the winter months are cold and the ground logs heavy snow.
Majority of the rainfall occurs during the winter, which is a dampener for moving on the trails. Rain and snow shut down many trails and roads as a large section of the park close during the cold season. Low temperatures do not support the cause either, as lower accommodation rates and snow activities such as skiing and snowshoeing are the major attractions of winter.

Yosemite is prone to forest fires in the long and dry summer. Forest fires damage natural woodlands, though it clears off the dead vegetation and spurs new growth.
The Rim Fire in 2013 destroyed nearly 500 acres off natural habitat as the park closed for the tourists. Another large fire, the Ferguson Fire closed a big section on the western boundary of the park in August 2018, which was the largest closing in thirty years.
