Raleigh has a humid subtropical type of climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) with hot, humid summers and cold winters. Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina, lies at the meeting point of the Piedmont and Atlantic Coastal plains in Wake County in the central part of the American state. The location near the tropical latitudes, moderate distance from the Atlantic Ocean, and low altitude chiefly influence Raleigh's climate.

Raleigh, the City of Oaks, with many oak trees in the heart of the city, lies at an elevation of 96 meters above sea level. The topography consists of gently rolling hills which slope eastward in the direction of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The rest of the terrain is mainly flat and consists of lakes, creeks, and rivers. Raleigh faces frequent hurricanes and tornadoes that are typical of the southeastern United States.

Raleigh has hot and humid summers with an average high temperature of 90°F (32.2°C) at the peak of July. One-third of the summer days cross 90°F (32.2°C) and 70% experience daily highs of at least 80°F (26.7°C). Winters are short and cold, and one-fourth of the nights register temperatures below freezing. The average low temperature is 31°F (-0.6°C) at the peak of the winter in January, and eight days during the year drop below 20°F (-6.7°C). Autumn and spring have uncanny similarities with moderate temperatures, but the rainfall tends to be a little heavier during the fall season.

The annual precipitation in Raleigh averages 43" (1092.2mm) and has mostly even distribution of rainfall throughout the year. July has 12 rainy days, the highest of the year, which totals to 114. The snowfall is a scanty 6" (152.4mm), but sleet and freezing rain are common in winter. The annual sunshine is an ample 2606 hours with the most amount of sun in June at 268 hours. The relative humidity averages 70% during the year, with August the most humid at 78%.
