Columbus has a humid continental type of climate (Köppen climate classification Dfa) that borders on the humid subtropical (Cfa) towards the south of the city with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters.
Columbus, the capital of Ohio, lies near the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers in the Franklin County in the central part of the state. The cold air from the Canadian north and the warm air from the tropics, both, influence the climate.

Columbus has an average elevation of 275 meters above sea level with a difference ranging from 207 meters at the lowest point to 345 meters at the highest. The topography is naturally flat and consists of rivers, numerous creeks, and ravines. The vegetation consists of maple, oak, poplar, walnut, buckeye, hickory among other deciduous trees.

Summers are hot and muggy in Columbus with the temperatures in the 55°F (12.8°C) to 95°F (35°C) range. The average high temperature reaches 85°F (29.4°C) at the peak of July as the humidity touches a high of 73%. Winters are severely cold with ten days around 10°F (-12.2°C) and the majority of the nights are below freezing. The average low-temperature drops to 22°F (-5.6°C) in January and even entire days may be frozen. Late spring and early autumn are pleasant and dry with low humidity.

Early autumn is pleasant with warm days and cold nights, the rainfall is moderate, and the landscape is colorful. Summer is the peak tourist season, but the temperatures are high, and the conditions are humid.

December to February during the winter season is the worst time to visit Columbus. The cold is severe, and the majority of the nights are below freezing.
