Crater Lake has a subarctic type of climate (Köppen climate classification Dsc) with short, cool summers and long, icy winters. It lies in Klamath County in south-central Oregon in the western United States. The lake region lies in the temperate latitudes at a high elevation, which influences its climate. The North Pacific High influences summers, while the Aleutian Low causes significant snowfall during the winter.

Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the United States at 594 meters, among lakes with basins above sea level, has a surface elevation of 1883 meters and a high rim elevation between 2100 to 2400 meters. The lake fills a deep caldera formed by the destruction of the volcano Mount Mazama, which has no streams moving into or out of it, with water lost by evaporation refilled by rain and snow. The water has a deep blue hue with a very high degree of clarity. The surrounding national park consists of hills, forests, while the sandy, loamy soil displays various shades of brown.

Summers are short and cool in Crater Lake, as the snow remains intact until mid-July when the average temperatures reach a peak of 70°F (21.1°C). Winters are frigid with the coldest month of January, registering an average of 18°F (-7.8°C). The lake, however, seldom freezes, with surface temperatures between 33.1°F (0.6°C) and 66°F (18.9°C). Spring and fall seasons are short, cold, and snowy.

Snowfall is heavy and persistent from October to June with the annual deposit at an enormous 505" (12827mm) and a maximum snow cover that averages 139" (3530.6mm) over the years. The yearly precipitation is an abundant 62" (1574.8mm), with the most torrential rainfall occurring from November to April. There is no dry period, although the summer is relatively drier than the rest of the year. Frost is possible even during the summer with mid-July to mid-August being the warmest period of the year. The annual sunshine is around 2700 hours.

The best time to visit Crate Lake is from July to August in the short summer when the temperatures are at the warmest of the year between 41°F (5°C) and 70°F (21.1°C). The rainfall is also meager during mid-summer with a few incidences of frost and snowfall. The lake and surrounding areas have plenty of activities during the summer, including swimming, fishing, and hiking. The Rim Drive is motorable and accessible, with numerous observation points along the caldera rim of the lake.

The worst time to visit Crate Lake is during the winter from December to February when the snowfall is massive, precipitation is abundant, and the cold is severe. November to March has the heaviest snowfall with an average of over 80" (2032mm) per month. More than half the annual rainfall occurs during the winter season, and the skies remain cloudy and gloomy with few hours of sunshine. Trails and campgrounds close during the winter.

Crater Lake is prone to afternoon thunderstorms during the summer and enormous snowfall for the rest of the year with the highest being record 885" (22479mm) in 1949. Snowstorms are frequent with the record being 20" (508mm) for a single storm during the winter. The severe storms make the roads impassable for long periods and cause the closure of trails. The massive snow deposits create the risk of avalanches around the park.
