Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN

Great Smoky Mountains National Park has a humid continental type of climate (Köppen climate classification Dfb) with warm, humid summers and cold winters.
The national park lies in the states of Tennessee and North Carolina and comprises the Great Smoky Mountains and a part of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is a fragment of the Appalachian Mountain Chain. The park has about 36 percent of its forestlands in the form of old growth, deciduous and temperate forests that give it a rich diversity of flora and fauna.

Great Smoky has a diverse topography with elevations that range from lowlands to 2000 meters above sea level, which results in temperatures that vary up to -6.7°C (19.9°F) between different altitudes. Although the average high temperature stands at a warm 21.7°C (71.1°F) in the peak of July, temperatures of 26.7°C (80.1°F) to 32.2°C (90°F) are common during summer days. The best time to visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park is from June to October during the summer and the autumn seasons.
The park ranks as number one in the United States regarding national park visitor numbers -, while summer draws vacation crowds with a combination of warm and hot days that cross 26.7°C (80.1°F) and temperate nights, the fall season entices tourists with its beautiful colors, particularly in October. Spring is mild as occasional snow accumulation, or a winter storm is still a factor in March.

November to February in the peak of winter is the worst time to visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park as the winter months are cold with heavy snow logging.
Tourist numbers shrink as many trails close for the winter along with visitor attractions as the ground is white and the roads become inaccessible. Cold dampens the spirits of any remaining visitors as the temperatures often drop to the frigid levels below -3.9°C (25°F) and the conditions become inhospitable.

Great Smoky is prone to forest fires and lightning during the summer. Forest fires are most common in June at low and mid-level elevations that comprise mainly of oak and pine trees. Lightning is the chief cause of the fires with an average of two strikes per year. Forest fires close sections of the park to visitors but are essential to dispose of dead vegetation and support the ecosystems to maintain the natural diversity of plants and animals.
