Yuma has a hot desert climate (Köppen climate classification BWh) with severely hot summers and warm winters.
Yuma lies in the southwest corner of Arizona in the Sonoran Desert, near the eastern borders of California and north of Mexico. The city is in proximity of the Gulf of California, the Colorado and Gila rivers and has topography of desert lands, farmlands and mountains.

Yuma, the sunniest place on earth, records annual sunshine of 4000 hours. The sunshine registers for a record 90% of daylight hours on an average, as the city is the driest and least humid place in the United States. Average precipitation is a meager 3.4" (86.4mm) over the year with September the rainiest month - odd years hardly receive an inch of rainfall.

Summers are scorching hot and dry with average high temperatures above 100°F (37.8°C). At least 118 days in the year cross the 100°F (37.8°C) mark while 242 days are above 80°F (26.7°C).
Winters are warm with a lack of snowfall, as the average low temperature is around 47°F (8.3°C) in January. The average low temperatures are above 50°F (10°C) for 239 days and cross 70°F (21.1°C) for 97 days in the year. The freeze-free winters allow the growing season to flourish in the absence of frost and snow. The arid desert climate results in substantial differences between the daily high and low temperatures. Clear skies for long periods are a distinctive feature of Yuma's climate.
Spring and fall are short, as the summer heat is persistent to a lesser degree even during these periods. Summer monsoons bring rain from July to September with the latter being the rainiest month in Yuma.

The highest recorded temperature in Yuma is 124°F (51.1°C), set in July 1995, while the lowest recorded temperature is 21°F (-6.1°C), set in January 2007.

The best time to visit Yuma is between November to March when the temperatures are mild, and the weather is comfortable.
The average high temperatures during this period range from a mild 68°F (20°C) to 79°F (26.1°C) while the average low temperatures are between a cozy 46°F (7.8°C) to 59°F (15°C). The sun shines for at least for an average of a daily 9 hours and is suitable for outdoor activities due to its low ultraviolet index. Additionally, winter is relatively less prone to weather hazards compared to the summer with the caveat that many snowbirds migrate to Yuma during the cold winters of the north.

Summer is the worst time to visit Yuma as the temperatures soar above 100°F (37.8°C) for the majority of the period from June to August.
Almost every day in the summer from June to August surpasses 90°F (32.2°C) as the scorching sun breathes fire over the arid landscape. The dry air brings no respite, and the lack of rainfall further exacerbates the heat. Summer occasionally brings storms and flash floods in addition to the high degree of heat.

Yuma is susceptible to occasional tropical storms from the south and life-threatening flash floods during the summer. Hurricanes occur once in a few years, and wind speeds of 40 to 60mph (96.6km/h) are common during these periods due to the vastly open areas and relatively low elevation topography.
