Kansas is a state located in the central United States. It covers an area of 82,278 square miles (213,100 square kilometers) and has an estimated population of 2,937,880 people as of 2022. The capital of Kansas is Topeka and it is bordered by Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Colorado.
The state is known for its diverse landscape, ranging from the eastern prairies to the high plains of the west, with elevations reaching over 3,000 feet (915 meters). Indigenous tribes like the Kansa, Osage, Pawnee, and Wichita lived in the region before European settlers arrived. Kansas was admitted to the Union on
January 29th, 1861, becoming the 34th state.
Agriculture quickly became an important industry in the state, as farmers tilled the Great Plains. After World War II, airplane production also expanded, along with other farm products.
Nicknamed the Sunflower State, the Jayhawker State, or simply the Land of Ahs, Kansas's motto is "Ad Astra Per Aspera (To the Stars Through Difficulties)." The western meadowlark is the official state bird and common sunflower is the state flower. "Home on the Range" is the official state song. Kansas is represented by four seats in the House of Representatives in the US Congress. Time zones in the state are Mountain (GMT − 7 hours) and Central (GMT − 6 hours).
