The US state of
Utah is located in the western part of the country and is known as the “Beehive State”. It covers an area of 84,898 square miles (219,884 sq km) and has an estimated population of 3,380,800 for 2022. The capital of Utah is Salt Lake City.
Utah is bordered by Idaho to the north, Wyoming to the northeast, Colorado to the east, Arizona to the south, and Nevada to the west. At Four Corners, in the southeast, Utah meets Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona at right angles, the only such meeting of states in the nation.
The state contains the Great Salt Lake, parts of the middle Rocky Mountains, and Uinta Mountains, with the western third made up of a broad desert-like area. Around 70% of the land is owned by either the federal or the state government. The major industries include agriculture and tourism.
Utah was admitted to the Union on
January 4th 1896, making it the 45th state to join. The state’s nickname of “Beehive State” comes from its motto of “Industry”, while the official state bird is the California seagull and flower is the sego lily. The state song is “Utah, This Is the Place”. In the US House Of Representatives, Utah has three seats out of 435. The time zone in the state is Mountain (GMT -7 hours).
