Maryland, located in the eastern United States, is a state that has much to offer. With an area of 12,406 square miles (32,131 km2) and an estimated population of 6,177,224 people in 2022, it is bordered by Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, the District of Columbia, and West Virginia. The main geographic regions are the coastal plain along Chesapeake Bay, the Piedmont plateau, and the Appalachian Mountains.
Due to its proximity to the national capital, Maryland has experienced significant growth over the past century. Much of this growth can be attributed to the diverse economy of the state, which is primarily based on government services and manufacturing. Other important aspects of Maryland's economy include tourism, agriculture, and fishing.
The state has many nicknames, including the “Free State” and the “Old Line State.” Its motto is “Manly Deeds, Womanly Words.” The state bird is the Baltimore oriole, the flower is the black-eyed Susan, and the state song is “Maryland, My Maryland.” Maryland is represented in the U.S. House of Representatives by eight seats out of the total 435. It is situated in the Eastern time zone and GMT − 5 hours.
