Niagara Falls is comprised of three moderately high waterfalls that are found in the southern part of the scenic Niagara Gorge. The gorge has a beautiful location between the province of Ontario, Canada, and
New York State in the United States. It has been naturally carved by the Niagara River and goes on up to the Niagara Escarpment near Queenston in Ontario.
The Niagara Falls is comprised of the larger Horseshoe Falls, which is also referred to as the Canadian Falls. It is the largest of the three waterfalls and is located directly upon the Canadian and United States international border. The American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls are moderately smaller than the Horseshoe Falls. Both of them are located within the United States and have incredibly scenic surroundings. Between the Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls, lies the ever-beautiful Goat Island. And between the Bridal Veil Falls and the American Falls, lies another moderately small, but very beautiful island called Luna.
Horseshoe Falls has been listed as the most powerful of all waterfalls, flow rate-wise, in North America. Combined, the Niagara Falls registers the highest flow rate in all of North America’s waterfalls. The beauty of the Niagara Falls has become a great attraction both for local and international tourists, including its scenic surroundings of rivers, forestry, and islands.
Formed through a complex geographical process known as the Wisconsin Glacial Episode, Niagara Falls happened with the water from the Great Lakes and made a path through the Niagara Escarpment and well into the Atlantic Ocean. The cities of Buffalo, Toronto, Ontario, and New York pride in being the closest to these wondrous falls.
Because of its high flow rate, Niagara Falls has been a vital source for generating hydroelectric power and remains as the main tourist attraction spot in the regions surrounding it. As for other aspects like economic, commercial, and industrial roles, Niagara Falls has not been such an active hub in the recent past.
Up-close views of the beautiful falls can be achieved from the Hurricane Deck, a famed spot on Goat Island. A natural aquarium has been set to host penguins, sea lions, and seals to attract more visitors. Visitors also take to the intriguing mist boat tours that render them right at the foot of the Horseshoe Falls.
A load of history and cultural development of the Niagara Falls region is preserved away in the Niagara Wax Museum of History, just near the falls.
The area around Niagara Falls enjoys a cold temperate climate that is typical of the humid continental climate of Köppen Dfb. This weather has warm and pleasant summers and cold, dramatic winters.
Winter brings all forms of ice formations around the falls, which remains an attractive sight. Outdoors is not as active, but sightseeing and photography are common around the falls.
Summer remains warm with the temperature averaging per day. The elongated daylight hours make an excellent time to tour the falls and its surroundings.
Spring and autumn are very brief, most acting as transitional seasons.
As much as Niagara Falls remains open for visiting all year round, the peak of the tourist season is between
June and
August at the height of summer, thanks to the lovely weather and minimal weather hazards.
