Texas, USA

Texas is a southwestern U.S. state renowned for its incredible size, both in terms of population and area. Spanning 695,662 square kilometers (268,597 square miles), the Lone Star State is the second largest state in the country by both population and area. It is bordered by Oklahoma to the north (along the Red River), Arkansas and Louisiana to the east (with the Sabine River as most of the border), the Gulf of Mexico to the south, Mexico to the southwest, New Mexico to the west, and Oklahoma's panhandle to the northwest. The diverse terrain changes dramatically from east to west, beginning with the fertile Coastal Plains on the Gulf of Mexico, followed by the Great Plains grasslands, and ending with the arid High Plains of the Panhandle.

Texas was first established as an independent republic in 1836 after many years of struggle against Mexico. After nearly a decade of independence, Texas became the 28th U.S. state in 1845. Today, the state continues to be a leader in oil and natural gas production and petroleum refining. Its high-tech industries, such as electronics and aerospace components, are also becoming increasingly important. Agriculture is another major industry, as Texas is one of the leading cotton, cattle, and sheep producers in the country.

The capital of Texas is Austin, and it is affectionately known as the Lone Star State. Its state motto is “Friendship”, and its official bird is the northern mockingbird, flower the bluebonnet, and song “Texas, Our Texas”. The state has 36 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, and is divided into two time zones: Mountain (GMT − 7 hours) and Central (GMT − 6 hours).
