Houston has a humid subtropical type of climate (Köppen climate classification Cfa) with long, hot and humid summers and short, mild winters. Houston lies in the Harris County of Southeastern Texas, near the Gulf of Mexico and Galveston Bay. The proximity to large water bodies, which brings warm air for much of the year, has a significant influence on the climate.

Houston, the Space City, stands at an average altitude of 32 meters above sea level. The topography mainly consists of temperate grasslands, forests, marshes, and swamps, along with lakes and rivers. A number of waterways, conduits and shipping channels span the region to connect the city to the Gulf of Mexico. Houston lies a little south beyond the Tornado Alley of America that extends up to northern Texas, but occasionally faces severe tornadoes as well as thunderstorms.

Summers are sweltering in Houston with high temperatures and a high degree of humidity. The average high temperature reaches around 95°F (35°C) at the peak of August. A few days cross 100°F (37.8°C), but at least 106 days cross 90°F (32.2°C). Winters are mild to cool with the average daily high temperatures above 60°F (15.6°C). Snow is rare, and the nights rarely drop below 35°F (1.7°C) at the peak of the cold season. The spring and autumn seasons are mostly wet and have warm weather conditions.

Houston is mostly sunny and bright over the year and registers 2578 hours of annual sunshine. Average annual precipitation is an ample 50" (1270mm) with even distribution over the year. Snowfall is almost absent in Houston but a few winter nights are frosty. The humidity is high throughout the year and peaks at 90% during summer mornings due to the clashes of air masses that travel from the Gulf of Mexico and the desert lands.

The highest temperature on record in Houston is 109°F (42.8°C), set on September 4, 2000, while the lowest recorded temperature is 5°F (-15°C), set on January 18, 1930.

The best times to visit Houston are during the temperate periods from March to April in the spring and October to November in the autumn. Early spring receives relatively less rainfall, and the temperatures are in the mild range of 53°F (11.7°C) to 80°F (26.7°C). Late autumn has moderate rain with the temperatures in the range of a warm 52°F (11.1°C) to 82°F (27.8°C). Spring and autumn are less prone to thunderstorms and tornadoes compared to the summer. Winter is mild, but temperatures go below 40°F (4.4°C) sporadically.

The worst time to visit Houston is in the blazing summer and the transitional periods that together last from May to September when the conditions are hot, humid and harsh. The long summer has temperatures that regularly cross 95°F (35°C) and many times go beyond 100°F (37.8°C). The heat is unbearable to tourists from the temperate regions, more so due to the high humidity. Summer is prone to thunderstorms, tornadoes, and flooding as the season receives the highest amount of rainfall in the year.

Houston faces thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods, mostly during late spring and the long summer. Although they are less on the Gulf Coast than the Pacific Ocean side, storms are common in the summer. Thunderstorms and tornadoes bring lightning, destructive winds and heavy rainfall in the region. The flat topography and low elevation in the downtown areas is a frequent cause of flooding during the period of heavy rains.
