Laredo has a hot semi-arid type of climate (Köppen climate classification BSh) with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. Laredo lies on the north bank of the Rio Grande River on the Rio Grande Plains, east of the Mexican Mountains in Webb County of the American state of Texas. The Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains, Gulf of Mexico and Chihuahua desert chiefly influence Laredo's harsh climate.

Laredo stands at an average altitude of 137 meters above sea level. The topography is made of a few hills and flatlands, while the vegetation consists of mesquite, oaks, arid plants, and grasses. There are a few water bodies, including lakes, creeks, and man-made reservoirs. The region is sandy and rocky with a dry atmosphere as mountains block the moisture from the Pacific Ocean.

Summers are sweltering in Laredo due to its geographical location. The average high temperature is around 100°F (37.8°C) at the peak of August. Around one-third of the days during the year cross 90°F (32.2°C) and many are above 100°F (37.8°C). Winters are cold compared to other areas in South Texas, with the average low temperatures around 46°F (7.8°C). The average daily temperatures in the cold season reach 66°F (18.9°C).

Laredo receives scanty rainfall to the tune of 20" (508mm) with relatively more rainfall from May to October amid stormy conditions. The skies are mostly bright and clear, with around 220 sunny days and more than 2700 hours of sunshine during the year. Snowfall is rare in Laredo with rare instances of 1 to 2" (50.8mm) of snow. The air is dry as the hot air masses travel to Laredo from the desert lands. Substantial temperature differences exist between day and night that easily cross 30°F (-1.1°C).

The highest temperature till date in Laredo is 115°F (46.1°C) on May 7, 1927, while the lowest temperature is 5°F (-15°C) on February 12, 1899.

The best times to visit Laredo are from March to April and October to November when the conditions are relatively mild. The temperatures are in the comfortable range of 55°F (12.8°C) to 87°F (30.6°C) with the absence of heat waves that frequently occur during the summer. Nights are warmer than the winter, yet they are comfortable. The chance of storms and extreme hot and cold weather events is less during the temperate months.

The worst time to visit Laredo is during the summer from June to August when the heat is at its peak. Heat waves can be deadly in the desert landscape. High temperatures can touch 110°F (43.3°C) and tend to remain there for extended periods due to lack of moisture. The scanty rainfall is in occasional bursts and seldom helps to lower the heat. Even the nights are uncomfortable with the average temperatures around 76°F (24.4°C) during the summer.

Laredo is prone to droughts due to its dry weather and scanty rainfall. The city has man-made reservoirs in additions to a few lakes and creeks, and water conservation efforts are on the rise. The weather is hot in summer with long periods of extreme heat and violent, sudden storms within brief periods. The arid vegetation and dry soil are unable to hold even small, heavy bursts of rain that can lead to flash floods within a matter of minutes.
