A Short-Lived Break in the Clouds

Seattle, WA, soaked in a fleeting burst of sunshine on Sunday - a brief reminder that blue skies do exist here, even in late October. But the dry spell is already over. Forecasters say rain will return Monday morning and linger through the rest of the week.

“It was a nice break," said Jeff Michalski, meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “Obviously, we had a pretty wet Friday and Saturday, but things have settled down a little bit. That will change again by Monday."

A low-pressure system spinning off the Pacific Ocean is moving toward western Washington, bringing with it waves of moisture and scattered showers. For most residents, it means another week of umbrellas, damp sidewalks, and cloud-covered afternoons.

Rivers Swollen, Ground Saturated

The rain that fell late last week already left its mark. Between Friday and Saturday, much of the Puget Sound region picked up between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain. The Snoqualmie and Skykomish rivers rose close to flood stage before stabilizing on Sunday.

Although this next round of precipitation will not be a washout, the ground remains saturated, and any additional rainfall could bring minor flooding to low-lying areas and neighborhood streets.

Cool Days, Damp Nights

The temperature story will stay steady. Daytime highs across the Seattle area will sit in the low to mid-50s Fahrenheit, while overnight lows dip into the 40s. The heaviest rainfall is expected around Wednesday and Thursday, tapering off slightly as the weekend approaches.

No major windstorms or coastal threats are on the horizon, but the return of steady drizzle marks a familiar rhythm for locals - the slow, gray onset of the Pacific Northwest’s long wet season.

The Start of the Gray Season

Daylight saving time ended over the weekend, adding to the seasonal shift. Even with an extra hour of sleep, many Seattle residents will feel the sudden darkness arriving before dinnertime.

For now, the advice is simple: keep the rain gear by the door, savor any moment of sun that breaks through the clouds, and prepare for the soft drumbeat of rain on rooftops that will define the week ahead.

The brief sunshine is gone. The gray season has returned - right on schedule.
