Warmth holds on - but not for long

The first full week of October is off to an unusually warm start in Washington, WA, where afternoon highs are once again reaching around 80°F (27°C) . Sunshine, light breezes, and a touch of humidity have made the days feel more like early September than fall.

The air tonight stays mild, slipping into the 50s and low 60s under mostly clear skies. A bit of patchy fog may appear before dawn, especially in river valleys and low-lying suburbs.

“It’s hard to complain," one local forecaster said. “Another warm, golden afternoon - we’ll take it."

Tuesday brings one last warm spell

Tuesday will be the final reminder of summer before the weather turns. The day begins bright and dry, then clouds will slowly build as a cold front approaches from the west.

Temperatures will again climb to near 80°F, with a southerly wind gusting between 15 and 20 mph. Humidity will rise a little, giving the air that faintly sticky feel. By late evening, showers will start to push in - first as light sprinkles, then heavier rain closer to midnight.

Meteorologists say the front should pass through by early Wednesday morning, bringing the first taste of a cooler, fresher pattern.

A crisp change arrives midweek

By sunrise Wednesday, rain will be tapering off from northwest to southeast. Clouds will begin to break, but the difference in temperature will be unmistakable.

Daytime highs will stall in the upper 60s to low 70s, about ten degrees lower than the start of the week. Behind the front, drier air sweeps in, and by nightfall, lows will tumble into the 40s across much of the region.

Thursday and Friday promise true autumn weather - clear skies, gentle winds, and crisp mornings that may call for sweaters and flannel. Daytime temperatures will hover in the mid to upper 60s, perfect for outdoor walks and fall colors beginning to turn.

Weekend could turn unsettled

The forecast for the weekend is still uncertain. One scenario shows a coastal storm developing offshore, which could spread rain into the Mid-Atlantic by Sunday. Another keeps the system farther east, leaving the region dry and pleasant through both days.

Either way, forecasters agree on one thing - the short burst of warmth is coming to an end. The next few days will mark the true arrival of fall across the D.C. area.
